Close encounter

New Post!

Spam landed in my mailbox from my Dad (he thought it was real!). It was a Laptop give away by Sony, It's a SCAM! Don't forward it to anyone else!
If you forward it, here is what happens:
For every 100 users/e-mails that spammers get, $5! If you forwarded to a couple of friends, they forwarded to more and yadayadayada, the spammers get hundreds of dollars! Easy money right?
So, stop spam, stop hacking, DON'T FORWARD!

Security headlines - you NEED to read this, might help you!

Terms: Rogue Software

Rogue software also known as Scareware is a FAKE program that tricks you into sharing your information and giving money to black hat hackers. It can be used either through visiting the website, or adware or spyware in your computer system. It almost tricked me but I figured it out when I looked at the address bar and noticed it was a FAKE web page so be careful!

It can ANYWHERE and ANYTIME! Be on your guard ALWAYS!
Tip: Visit http://voices.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2009/09/what_to_do_when_rogue_anti-vir.html to find ways to deal with a Scareware attack!

Windows 7

New Post!

Windows 7 is the new OS from Microsoft that has gripped the world. Windows 7 is 'suppose' to have XP speed with VISTA display, it is a come back for Vista. It has been in test for a long time and is finally on the shelves. PERSONALLY, I would strongly advice you to wait a month or less before buying it cause it has a lot of software and hardware issues because it came as a shock to everyone!
I haven't had a chance to test it out but it sounds cool and interesting. Might get one when I get the chance.
With Windows 7, Microsoft HOPES to regain lost 'profits' that Vista couldn't get. Microsoft is under MAJOR pressure to prove that their OS is the best out there! Vista caused a lot of loss to Microsoft because it TRIED to fix something that was never broken!
Good Luck and may the BEST OS win!

Terms: Trojan

New Post!

Every once in a while I will post about computer terms to better explain it!
Trojan: A trojan or a Trojan Horse is a program that looks friendly but is actually Malware in disguise. Trojan comes from a famous Greek Mythology about how the Greeks conquered the people of Troy by leaving a Horse as trophy to the Trojans for winning the battle. The Horse contained a small select group of Greek soldiers who opened the gates late at night while the Trojans slept and the entire Greek army destroyed the city.
Trojans are the trickest type of Malware that you wish to never deal with because it might be Spyware, Adware, Bot, Backdoor, etc.

Bluetooth

New Post!

++
I have finally unlocked some secrets about BLUETOOTH! I now have MY very OWN BLUETOOTH NETWORK to experiment with! Creating one is easy fun and time efficient! My network consists of an old PPC 6600 Sprint, my Dell Vostro 1520 laptop and my Nokia XM5530!
Creating this network was Fun and puzzling! Also it's going to be helpful with my constant transfer of Music and Pictures between Laptop and Devices!
Why Build one? It's FEFC (It's Fun, It's Efficient, It's Free and It's Cool!)
Materials required to build one? A bluetooth adapter, some experience/experimentation and devices.
How to build one? You will figure it out, its like you pairing two devices together except you can add more!
CAUTION: Bluetooth is not "100%" secure! I put password, and a lot of other security jagon on my network to increase it to a "100%" but it's vulnerable to hacking!
(*Tip: Do personal research for a better view on Bluetooth!)

Twitter and its effects

New Post!

Twitter started as a small company back in 2006 but is recognised as a global microblogging social networking website today. Lets take a short trip through time.
Twttr now known as Twitter founded by Jack Dorsey and many others. Jack Dorsey had envisioned today's modern Twitter! Jack Dorsey was the VERY first person to Twit! His infamous words "just setting up my twttr"

Twitter has changed the web and as such, many applications have been written by developers worldwide about Twitter! Tweetdeck is a famous one, Twitseeker is another one, I could go on and on and I won't cover it all! Heres a site that has 250+ Twit apps!
Twitter is a breakthrough in communication on the web! Twitter is now used in businesses to boast popularity. It can also be used on a personal level, you can meet people from around the world with similar interests.
If I wanted to continue writing about twitter, I would but.... Its too much detail to talk about!
Twitter has SAVED LIFES! No joke! For example, the recent Tsunami in Philippines rendered many homeless and some people spent hours on their rooftops waiting for rescuers, rescuers had a lot of area to cover and a lot of people. But, when people began to twit their positions, they were usually the first to be found and that saved lives!
(*Tip: If you use Google Chrome, type "twit" or "tweet" and it will bring up a bunch of sites about Twitter!)

3D web browsing

New Post!

Lets take a step in our bright hopeful future on the Internet, wouldn't it be cool to surf the net in 3D?
Well, you have the chance to now to experience browsing in 3D, please don't feel down because this is the early stages of a possible future.
My source for this post is http://www.extremetech.com/article2//0,2845,1974347,00.asp.
These are the current 3D web browsers I could find: 3B, Browse3D and SphereXPlorer.
I won't go into boring and repeated details but the concept of using our graphics card other than gaming but for web browsing is amazing. Also, a cool plugin that you could experiment with is Exitreality. This a great plugin that changes your everyday 2D text and videos to 3D fun mixed with chatting.
You can experiment with these browsers just for fun and nothing serious, great when looking for pictures or shopping online.

What web age are we in?

New Post!

Hey guys, this is a random article about what web are we in, are we in web 3.0 or web 4.0 or whatever version it is these days.
Fact: Currently the latest is WEB 4.0 but that isn't till 1 or more years in the future for everyone! The list goes on till WEB 9.0 since this how far our imagination can take us. WEB 9.0 will take place around 2054, long time right? About 4 more decades and counting!
So our current web age that most experts agree on is web 3.0 since it is being used NOW!
OK, how is this helpful? Nice question to my next paragraph!
(Watch this Youtube video for facts)
Web 1.0 was as most of you smart people already figured was the beginning of the Internet back in the late 1970s created by (WAIT FOR IT!) US military originally as a project code named ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) which acted as a defense information network during the Cold war. This was the FATHER (or MOTHER) of the Internet which was created by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 - 1990 while working at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). All you had to do was read the information but you couldn't edit it.
Web 2.0 was created so that anyone could read and write data on the Internet. Not much to consider but the cool thing is that when this was created, people were PAID to write new information on the Internet.
Web 3.0 (our current age) is "Write, Read, Execution" - In order words its more SOCIAL with sites like Blogger and Facebook! It gives businesses and group events new meaning. Users Interact much more freely while mailing and chatting online.
WEB 4.0 (FUTURE) should be happening in a year or two. The main concept isn't clear yet but from a techy overview it's more security centered ...yadayadayada stuff.

While, simple answer is we are in WEB 3.0, YAY!

Security MUST GET!

New Post!

Hey, Toby here! This post is about security softwares that I have reviewed and LOVE! IT IS ALL FREE!
Apps:
WOT - Web browser security! Check links before visiting them, always a step ahead!
Secunia PSI - Excellent software for finding vulnerabilities in your system! I have a laptop that is 98% secure!
AVG - PERFECT anti-virus scanner! Uses a new technology called behavioural detection (Or something like that!) in order words it doesn't need to register a virus against the database it can monitor it and make sure its a virus, Great for today's dynamic viruses! Completely free!
Comodo Firewall - Monitor and reinforce your web firewall! Its free and Thanx to it I know what goes in and comes out of my laptop on the web!
Avast! - Its ok, been protecting me for a long time! Great AV, 2nd below AVG in FREE anti-virus software.
Winpatrol - This is great to help monitor recent changes to systems and helps to trace viruses and spyware.
Ad-Aware - Its a good product that I use to make sure I am safe from Adware

Well, There lots more software out there but these ones I recommend HIGHLY! Post comments if you have questions!

Virus saga - The sly intruder

New Post!

I have been having trouble with my computer and I finally realised with great horror, it was a virus attack. This the first time and the last time that I will ever leave my computer without a password. I learnt the hard way what my friends are capable of especially after 'I' started the 'VBScript' wars. Here is my story:

Patrick is a nice and wild everyday dude who I strangely became friends with. He is also a prankster and keeps turning my computer off and hiding the battery. So, I planned my moves and inserted a HARMLESS trojan that shuts down your computer and sent to him as a warning, this was the beginning of the 'Scripts' war currently in the VBScript saga (LOL!).

So, I kept winning him with my skills as a 'Script Kiddie' and it was all legal because I wasn't breaking into his computer and all that trash. So, Patrick (being a natural prankster) planned his moves and waited like a snake stalking its prey and the one moment I was not on my computer he downloaded 2 VBScripts (according to him because I haven't found the second!) into my computer and played cool because it was the weekend and he knew I watched movies every Thursday.

Well tell you this, it took me a total of 12 hours to figure it out and fix my computer. 2 hours with trial and error to log on to my computer, 6 hours to scan computer with anti-virus engines while deleting recent files and changes and 4 hours to laugh off and delete the Script.
It was sunday and the school bus pulled up, I walked in pissed and he was laughing and asked if I liked the virus he put in my system and I said "This is not the last dance, I will get you yet!" he laughed and said "Whatever!"

THAT'S THE STORY, now the lesson is simple "DO NOT TRUST ANYONE WITH YOUR COMPUTER OR YOU MIGHT HAVE A SIMILAR STORY TO TELL!" Password your computer, get anti-virus and get experience online to better protect yourself.

Well, I promise this, I will get him yet (Evil laugh)!

Largest phishing attack on Email servers in history

New Post!

A guy walk up to your front door asks for your keys to the house, will you give it to him? Or, your working on your computer and a woman/lady appears randomly and asks for your password to your computer, will you say yes? You wouldn't (HOPEFULLY) give it to them because your smart enough to figure out that they can do horrible stuff to your computer or home.

Recently, over 10,000 Hotmail email accounts were compromised and listed on the web for all to see including passwords. And now over a total of 20,000 mixed email accounts were also compromised. This was possible because of a phishing attack. a phishing attack is when spam is sent to email boxes and users open and read it. They follow links, phone numbers, etc on the email and are phished of their identity.
A phishing attack relies on user interaction MOST of the time. So, the smarter and more time we use our COMMON sense, the better protected we are!

The unfortunate event that recently happened is a reminder to the world that we must be smart while surfing the web. Don't go clicking and filling forms that look suspicious! If you get a suspicious mail, don't follow the link on the email but research the company and don't call the number if there is one, use google! Basic common sense is what is needed for basic protection against phishs!

Keep safe!

TokBox

New Post!

Hey guys, I have found another cool site while surfing the web. TokBox is a FREE video chatting site that lets you either IM, email or have a video conference call with your friends. I have currently been using this site for 2 days and the features are interactive and slick. I gave TokBox a 4.7 out of 5 because the site is a great site and delievers quality videos while chatting but has a couple of bugs (not serious ones) that can be fixed and the company CONSTANTLY updates their website in order to make much more user friendly.

Heres the site:
